Adopt-A-Family for Christmas
The first project that the Social Justice Committee sponsored when it was founded 13 years ago was the Adopt-a-Family program. This has become perhaps the signature project that Resurrection parishioners associate with the Social Justice Committee. It's a way for members of the parish, young and old, entire families or single adults, to share in the joy of the Christmas season.
Adopt-a-Family starts right before Thanksgiving when parishioners are invited to select a tag with information on a family from either Howard County (Salvation Army) or four inner city parishes (Corpus Christi, St. Veronica, St. Gregory and St. Ambrose) from tables in the Link of the church. Each organization provides basic information about the needs of the individuals or families, including the number of people in the family and their names. Resurrection parishioners who "adopt" the families provide food for a holiday meal and presents for the younger children in the recipient families. Gifts are dropped off in the Resurrection Parish Hall on the weekend two weeks prior to Christmas for the inner city parishes (Corpus Christi, St. Veronica, St. Gregory and St. Ambrose) besides Howard County (Salvation Army).
Although the project requires the full cooperation and support of the Social Justice Committee over several weeks time, it has always been worth the effort. Resurrection parishioners routinely exceed the expectations of the Committee, with amazing examples of generosity. Adopt-a-Family demonstrates the best values of the season: generosity and love.
