St. Vincent dePaul

St. Vincent dePaul Society, Resurrection Conference

Families with income at or below the poverty level are everywhere.  They are found not only in the inner city, but in Howard County as well.  While Howard County is one of the wealthiest counties, there are residing within our county 5,000 families who are low income families and qualify for public assistance.  These families may have problems paying their rent, water, or electricity and may not even have enough money to buy food for the children.  For years, Resurrection Conference-St Vincent de Paul Society has built up a reputation of helping needy families who come to us for help.  Our ability to help these families is well recognized in the community and it's a reputation we are honored to have, and will try to maintain so long as we have the financial support from parishioners of the Church of the Resurrection.

"In as much as you do it to the least of my brethren, you do it to me."  (Matthew 25:40)

To provide emergency assistance to individuals and families in need who come to the Church of the Resurrection for help.
Faith- we see God's living presence in every person we serve. Dignity- we affirm the dignity of each individual by offering respect, compassion, and care. Community- we work in the community towards the well being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Service- we create opportunities for parishioners to offer their gifts to those in need.
On September 25, 1997, the Resurrection Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVDPS) was established for the purpose of providing emergency assistance to Howard County, Maryland residents who come to the parish for assistance. The St Vincent de Paul Society is a world-wide organization dedicated to providing human services to needy individuals and families without regard to race, religion, or national origin. The Society meets basic needs, while inspiring hope and empowering persons to reach their fullest potential. The Society advocates for the needy, promotes their dignity and self worth, and strives to walk with them, learn from them, and see in them the presence of God.
Volunteers are at the heart of the Society's work. Individuals participate in hands-on service to bear witness to their faith, and experience personal and spiritual growth through empowering persons to reach their fullest potential.
Specifically, the conference assists families in the following ways:
  • Funds to restore service when electric/gas/water has been terminated.
  • Temporary shelter for the homeless through funds given to Grassroots
  • Crisis Intervention Center.
  • Rental assistance for families facing eviction.
  • Emergency funds for pharmaceutical needs.
  • Emergency food packages as well as food store certificates.
  • Referrals to other local organizations providing assistance.
Funding is provided by Resurrection parishioners through the poor boxes located throughout the church as well as donations made specifically to The Resurrection Conference (SVDPS). Non-perishable food for the food pantry is donated by parishioners, Resurrection/St Paul School, Religious Education students, and local Cub Scouts. Approximately 700 families are served annually with disbursements over $50,000 per year.
The Resurrection Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society provides assistance to needy families three (3) days a week. Hours of operation are Tuesdays-10:am to 12:00 noon, Wednesdays-2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Fridays-10:00 am to 12:00 noon The conference maintains a close working relationship with other active Howard County organizations that provide a similar service including Howard County sponsored organizations such as Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center.
